Falun Gong: A decade of courage

Monday July 20, 2009 marks the tenth anniversary of the persecution against Falun Gong by the Chinese communist party.

Hopefully most of you, and those who have ordered from Orange Gadgets, know that my humanitarian cause in life is raising worldwide awareness about the brutal persecution and human rights violations against Falun Gong by the Chinese communist party, a persecution which started on July 20, 1999.

Another year has passed and as such, this post today is dedicated to the many Falun Gong practitioners who have suffered or been killed at the hands of the Chinese communist party and the many that have disappeared or have been imprisoned innocently as well as their families and relatives who have suffered as a consequence.

On July 20, 1999, China's former president Jiang Zemin started a brutal persecution campaign against the practice of Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) with his policy of extinction: "Ruin their reputation, exhaust their financial resources and destroy them physically."

A decade later, the persecution has not ended and innocent people are still being killed.

Falun Gong teaches people to be truthful, kind and tolerant.

I’ll just share with you what I PERSONALLY know about Falun Gong. Following are not my opinion, but simple facts. I am not an advocate of Chinese government, but rather feel necessary to offer some information you may be interested in.

Here is some background. I grew up in China. Starting around late 1980s, some guys started to promote various types of “Qi Exercise” (Qi Gong). Qi roughly refers to the inner spirit/energy that can be enhanced or manipulated through exercise http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi. Many of the Qi exercises were really frauds, but since the nation is not so well educated, they were easy to trick into the frauds. I PERSONALLY was brought to one Qi Master, who claimed to be able to make me see things even when I close my eyes, at a $100 cost, half of my parents’ monthly income at that time, and you can guess the result. Some claim they can cure all illnesses or make people smell the scent of flower from their palms or similar miracles. The exercise is free but mostly you need to pay fat money to get the "original", "enchanted" pamphlet or tape to “maximize the effects”. All my relatives were in some form of Qi Exercise, and I was brought to try at least three. They were not banned or persecuted. The Chinese government did want to stop them, they broadcast programs to analyze how these frauds work, and promote scientific education, but there were too many of these frauds to stop.

Falun Gong, as you can see from the name, started out as one of them. It soon took the place of Zhong Gong (after the huge fraud of Zhong Gong was publicized and its banning) and became the biggest of them. Later on it developed to include elements from Buddhism, and started to look like a religion. My grandpa and many of his colleagues who were all government officials exercised it, and I PERSONALLY tried it and read the pamphlet as well. It was not banned for years, but just like before, the government used scientific broadcasts to discourage people from engaging. After a particular article opposing Falun Gong as pseudo-science appeared, there was the big incident – thousands of Falun Gong members besieged China’s Whitehouse (the Forbidden City), lobbying to stop calling Falun Gong pseudo-science. That was the trigger. You know the Chinese government is a monopolist who see to that no one threatens its political position, and such siege has not happened in decades. That’s when the government realized it has become too big and started to have political impact, and banned the exercise. The government formed teams to try to convince people that the claims in the pamphlet is not true, and all the several people who exercised I PERSONALLY knew were talked out of it, including my grandpa.

Then the “persecution” started, but it applies only to the small percentage of people who were not talked out. I’ll cut it here because it went out of my sight. These are what I have PERSONALLY experienced and known, and they are all facts no one can deny. Later interactions with Falun Gong of mine are all through the pamphlets or anonymous phone calls or websites like yours. They claim the Chinese government has done the worst of all things in the world on them. There is one thing that I noticed. They STOPPED talking about their belief or teachings altogether. Falun Gong is about attacking Chinese government and solely that. That’s why in China most people, under government influence or not, think it is just a proxy of anti-China movement.

The religious persecution idea, which is very familiar to you westerners, is really funny for the Chinese. Historically China had developed no complete religions, and religion and state were NEVER related. It was probably due to Confucius’ teaching to “respect, but keep away from ghosts and gods” (meaning don't risk denying their existence, but don’t easily believe in them either). So there has been no religious persecution throughout thousands of years, and the Chinese people don’t understand what religious persecution is at all. Falun Gong was banned and persecuted because the government felt it started to have political strength; political purges had happened thousands of times though history and makes much more sense to the Chinese.

I’ve listed facts and background knowledge about the nation. I didn’t say the accused torture etc. was false, because I don’t know about it at all. But you shall see it will be as silly to only listen to the Falun Gong side, as to only listen to the Chinese government’s official reports. You Americans have one strength and weakness. You follow your intuition too much. This is sometimes empowering but sometimes stupid. In 70s you think using drug, playing guitar and having sex can stop the war. In 2000s you think driving a Prius can stop global warming. Now that without living for a single day in China or knowing any information from first hand, you believe Chinese government is like the Catholic church in medieval times who burned people because they do not believe in God, and link all other matters (Tibet, Olympics, freedom of speech) to it. Ask yourself, do you believe all these because you have absolutely verifiable evidences and complete understanding of the background, or just because some other people say the same? As a less biased source of information (there will always be bias whatsoever, towards whom I’m not sure), I recommend Wikipedia. Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falun_gong and various related topics, and think again.

Finally, I prefer to stay anonymous, since I know what happens when you oppose Falun Gong (I don’t want them to besiege my home). But feel free to post this comment anywhere. I thank you for being considerate about the Chinese’s human rights, and appreciate your endeavor in the promotion. But again, a warm heart can sometimes also heat your head up.
